Helping Your Body Remember: Reconnective Healing with Algernon Williams

You may already know Algernon Williams as a great massage therapist, energy healer and coach. But he also offers a form of energy work known as Reconnective Healing. Here, in Al's words, is a taste of what it has to offer.

Your body knows how to thrive. It knows how to heal and how to be at peace. However, it's all too easy to override this innate knowledge with the hustle and bustle of modern life. The deadlines, long hours and often competitive nature of our lives all tell us, deep inside, that the world around us is not safe and that we must be on guard.

When the body is in this fight-or-flight state, our survival instinct takes over and directs what the body needs and does. When this situation becomes chronic, when we "live" from this place, there is no energy left for healing, no attention to ease and definitely no peace of mind. Of course, this state is necessary for our survival. It is what stops us from walking in front of a bus. But when it switched on 24 hours hours a day, seven days a week, we begin to suffer for it. For many of us, even our rest times are filled with thoughts of what we've done and what we still have to do; our brain is still working and we are still in survival mode, leaving nothing for recovery and rejuvenation.

Reconnective Healing quickly takes you out of survival mode and puts you into rest-and-digest mode. This is where your body can finally relax, recover, rejuvenate and heal. This is where you thrive. At times, seemingly amazing healings can occur, but this is really a process of reconnecting to your body's natural healing mechanism. It says: "Remember this state, you can let go, there is no need to worry." As the body remembers, you naturally become less stressed about life, you feel healthier and you become more at ease.

"Work has begun to get easier and life has begun to get easier. The trivial things that would have bothered me before have become just that - trivial - and no longer have any effect on my life as I now know it." - Jeff McIntyre

If you'd like to learn more about Reconnective Healing, visit Al at Healium for a chat. He's here 8.30 am to 2 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Ground Control to Major Tom: Process Work with Martyn Cook

What do you transmit? Do you nourish and encourage other people, by being yourself? Does your body feel alert, relaxed and in tune with life? Or are you weighed down with difficulties? Process work brings awareness to our blockages and restores our natural radiance.

Human beings are powerful transmitters of energy and information. The human heart, which longs for connection and relationship, radiates powerful waves which can be measured on instruments. But the most delicate receiver is another human being. Subconsciously we exchange subtle vibrations with other beings all the time.

Most of what I transmit is unconscious. If I am sad or upset, then my facial expression, physical gestures, body posture and way of walking will automatically transmit "sadness." I can only stop this with effort - putting on a false mask. But this effort is wearying - and the falseness is obvious to everyone.

Your response to my transmission could be empathy or kindness - or scorn, disgust, annoyance. What is evoked in you depends on what is alive in you in the moment, and your habitual response patterns. If your own heart has become closed because of pain or hurt, then you may not have the inner resources to meet my need for loving attention.

Process work is a way of bringing to consciousness all those unresolved issues from our past - that clog up and distort the clarity of what we transmit. They also affect what we are capable of receiving - if your radio is not tuned exactly to the station then you will not hear the music!

Martyn Cook is a trained process facilitator, and works with clients to identify and release impediments to the free and easy flow of the life force. To learn more, visit his website at www.energyhealing.net.nz.

Services and Pricing at Healium

From time to time we are asked just what we offer at Healium and what these offerings cost. Fair questions. The latter is covered on our website, but we've opted not to post the former there simply to minimize updates to the website.

We also have two new offerings you should know about:

The 45-minute massage. This is a great option for you busy professionals who want some bodywork but also have tight schedules. In 45 minutes you'll receive a substantial treatment but still be able to get to Healium and back to your office in under an hour. All of our massage varieties are available in the 45-minute option. Of course, if you're not pressed for time, there's still the 60-minute option; and if you want to focus on just one area (say, upper back or calves), then the 30-minute massage is a great way to go.

The 30-minute private yoga lesson. This is a great option for the busy person who can't squeeze the scheduled classes into their lives or the perfect "touch up" to explore a specific posture or area of the body and take that information back into your regular classes. It's $65 for the half-hour lesson, with package rates available if you'd like to commit to a series of these lessons.

Here, then, is our current pricing scheme:

Yoga & Movement Classes (All Yoga classes + Chi Power + The Feldenkrais Method)

$12 drop-in for 45 min. or
  • 1 class per week for 4 weeks: $40;
  • 2 classes per week for 4 weeks: $72;
  • 3 classes per week for 4 weeks: $96

$100 for 60 min. | $65 for 30 min. (packages available)

WANTED: The Ultimate Nap

DESCRIPTION: Approx. 30 min. long, containing healing, energy, sound and light.

The Nap is on the loose

The Nap is most commonly known for visiting children, idlers, the sick and the elderly.

However, many brilliant minds throughout history haven prey on a daily basis to the power of the Nap. It has secretly aided many acts of greatness by such infamous individuals as John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Napoleon, Johannes Brahms, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Lance Armstrong, to name a few.

The Nap has been under investigation for many years but is still on the run.

  • NASA, while investigating the Nap, discovered that one 30 minutes long improved cognitive abilities by roughly 40 percent, leading to greater alertness, enhanced memory and clearer thinking.
  • The Archives of Internal Medicine concluded that the Nap could in fact be responsible for a 37 percent lowering of heart-related deaths.
  • Other agencies have found that levels of stress hormones are lower in those who take Naps.
  • Further evidence indicated that Rest and Relaxation caused by this Nap can actually boost one's creativity.
The Nap is most often spotted in the early afternoon, usually appearing for between 10 and 30 minutes. It seems to favor quiet settings with low light.

A REWARD has been offered for any and all who take the time to find the Nap.

Following Your Truth

The universe can only support you to the degree and in the direction you believe is most true for you. But it is up to you to define what that truth is.

Here is the secret:

All truths are true.

That's the nature of the infinite, otherwise it wouldn't be infinite. All truths are true, all are equal and valid. Choose which truth is you and live that truth until you change your mind about what is in this moment true for you, until the excitement shifts direction. then follow that excitement, every moment, no matter what form it comes in. Follow it, act on it to the best of your ability, because that's who you are. Even though it may not come to fruition in the way that you think, even though it may not live up to your expectations, follow it because it will put you where you need to be.

Excitement is the thread you need to follow, not how things look on the surface. Because the idea of reality is an illusion, it's the feeling, your emotions. It's the knowing that counts. Follow it, because that's who and what you are, and that's really all there is to it.

Befriending Fear

We have been afraid of fear, we live with fear, we try to conquer fear, but how many of us try to befriend fear? If you were to treat fear like a friend, you would begin to understand it and ultimately get more out of it.

Fear is your natural true vibration filtered through a belief system that is out of tune with your true, core self. Love is your natural vibration filtered through a belief system that is in alignment with your natural, true, core self. Your range of emotions - from excitement, love and joy to depression, disempowerment and fear - is there to tell you at any moment how close or far you are from your true, core self.

An analogy would be playing a piano. If you are playing your piano and you are enjoying the music, then suddenly come across a sour note - "plunk" - do you run away in panic, screaming " I shall never touch my piano again"? No. You say, "I need to tune the piano" so that the key becomes harmonious with all the other keys.

Each piano key is like a definition, a belief. When you come across one that gives you the sensation of fear, all that's telling you is to pay attention: you have a belief in this area of your life that is out of alignment with the whole of your life. Fine-tune it, bring it back into harmony, explore it and don't run away. Ask yourself what you would have to do tune it. How would you have to redefine it? How would you have to adjust this string in order to bring the piano back into tune, into alignment? Play with it little by little, until finally it's back.

There is a paradox here, and paradox is a very powerful tool. When you make a friend of your fear, when you know your fear is there to tell you something you want to know, you will invite it in. And miraculously, instantly, your fear will vanish. Because you will have transformed it into, first, curiosity - "What could this mean?" - and then into joy, by being willing to explore what it means for you.

That is how you use fear. Fear is just a knock at the door saying to pay attention here: this is something you want to know about yourself, this is something you need to know to integrate within yourself, to become more of who you are.

And wouldn't that be fun?

Awakening to Freedom: Some Concepts, Pt. 2

Today Algernon Williams takes us through the remaining core concepts from his book Awakening to Freedom: A Metaphysical Approach to Life Coaching.

Belief systems

The next concept is simply that your belief systems or your definitions are nothing more than the stories you tell. As that voice in your head talks to you day in and day out, you learn to believe what it is saying. But that voice can only talk from its story of past, present and future, from its current understanding of the reflection in its mirror. To make a change in your definitions, your beliefs, your motivations, your actions and so your life all you have to do is change the story. Tell the story of what you want, not what you have or what is happening. As you tell the story of what you want and begin to believe that new story, everything in the reflection must change as well.

Knowingness through surrender

This concept is above and beyond the idea of belief. It is simple knowingness, which comes from surrender, of letting go.

Our definitions of the word "surrender" usually include the idea of loss of some sort, or a lack of control or giving up, but this is not what I am talking about.

Surrender is the letting go of the concept of who you think you're supposed to be, and actually being who you are. When you allow yourself to the idea and the experience that you are created in the image of the Infinite, you give yourself access to infinite possibilities. Physical reality, which is only a mirror, can then reflect those unlimited possibilities back to you, in the form of synchronicities as they naturally unfold in your physical day-to-day life.

Surrender is actually the acceptance of your total self, not the forsaking of yourself as society would normally think of it.

Follow your joy

This brings us to our key concept, which puts all the other concepts together, and that has to do with being your sovereign self, which is simply another way of saying "Follow your joy."

Follow your excitement to the best of your ability, because the sensation of joy, excitement or unconditional love is the frequency of the energy that represents your natural, true, core, original self. So when you are acting on circumstances and opportunities that bring the highest level of joy, the highest level of excitement, you are saying you have the faith, the trust, to take the steps to act on your true self; and in so doing your physical reality, the mirror, will support you. It has no choice but to do so.

This is how we manifest our desires, this is how we find freedom; this is how we live the life we choose.

Awakening to Freedom: Some Concepts

Life coach, energy healer and massage therapist Algernon Williams has recently published his first book, Awakening to Freedom: A Metaphysical Approach to Life Coaching. Al's words on the healing journey really resonate with us, so we're very pleased to periodically share excerpts of his book as part of an ongoing series. Enjoy!

Let's begin with some groundwork of the primary concepts that will be contained in almost every aspect we'll discuss.

Many of you have heard about or worked with certain concepts and tools that help develop different states of being, certain states of mind that allow you to understand more clearly who and what you are as a person, as a being, as a personality.

Understanding the structure and the nature of yourself as a person and as a being will allow you to make changes, make shifts in your reality in the manner that you desire more effortless, with more joy and less pain.

These concepts are paramount now that we are in the "Age of Transition," the "Age of Awareness." These tools and concepts that I am presenting can hopefully be easily understood and applied, so that you can see the results in yourselves and in your physical reality relatively quickly.

Self-valuation

The first and foremost concept is that of self-valuation. I have come to understand from my personal experiences, as well as the experience of many of my clients, that one of the most difficult things that we have to do is learn to value ourselves. We have forgotten our connection with the infinite, partially because for many years we have been taught to think of ourselves as less than worthy, as undeserving, as possessing little or no value. Without an understanding of our worth, without an understanding of our value, no tool would really be effective.

Only when you begin to learn, behave and hold true that you are a worthwhile aspect of the infinite, that you are a beautiful and unconditionally loved and supported aspect of creation, and hold yourself in the same value that all of creation holds you in, only then will the tools be effective in the strongest way possible.

Physical reality as a mirror

Another concept is that physical reality is really just a mirror, that it can only reflect what you put out. The energy, the vibrational frequency you give off based on your beliefs, your emotions, your behavior, is what determines the kind of reality you experience. Simply put, physical reality doesn't exist except as a reflection of what you most strongly believe is true for you. That's all that physical reality is, just a mirror.

If you're looking in a mirror and you see your face with a frown on it, you know that you don't try to force the reflection to smile. You know that if you want to see the reflection smile you must smile first. When you decide to smile, the reflection has no choice but to return the smile.

Stretching this into our physiological reality, understand that we all have been trained, and taught to insist that we only base our behavior on the things that happen to us, on what is happening, on what is. We say things like "Get real," "Can't you see it's true?", "It's happening right in front of my eyes so how can I do anything about it?"and "I'll be happy if . . . I'll be happy when" - does all this sound familiar?

When you understand the principle you will realize it's more a matter of "I'll be happy because that's what I want to be!" When you choose to be happy simply because you can be, because that's what you want to be, the instant you choose to be that vibration of happiness the reflection in your physical reality has no choice but to reflect a reality that corresponds to the vibration of your joy. Because the universal reflecting mirror doesn't have a mind of its own, it can't contradict you, it's not going to argue with you. It's simply the reflection of what you put there, that's all. So if you are the vibration of happiness, you will get the reflection in all the ways that are reflective of your happiness; to the degree that your happiness vibration is turned on, you'll get that reality.

However, here's the fine print - this is what trips many of us up and gets us into trouble: We're still placing a condition on our happiness even when we think we're not. You might say, "Oh, yes, I'll be happy because I know that if I am happy then I'll get this happy reality, then I'll get what I want, then I'll get what I desire." If . . . then, if . . . then. You are still making it conditional on what happens outside of you and there is no outside. In order for the principle to really work, in order for reality to reflect back to you the true reflection of your happiness, you have to be happy, with no expectation that you will get a reflection back.

That's how it works. That's what makes it effortless. That's what makes it flawless. That's what makes it pristine. That's what makes it beautiful. That's what makes it awesome. You don't even have to think about what will come back, you simply can take it for granted, you can know, you simply can have gratitude towards the infinite, knowing that when you are happy nothing else can happen but happy reflections, and that will automatically bring you all of your desires.

How Energy Healing Works

Energy healer and massage therapist Algernon Williams discusses the experience of receiving and processing energy healing. At Healium, Al offers Reconnective Healing, The Reconnection, The Continuation and Intuitive Therapy.

A Hansel and Gretel Story

Let us consider that a loaf of bread is analogous to our being whole, one with spirit finding our true self. What most everybody is searching for.

As we journey through our lives we pick up crumbs of this loaf along the way, little tidbits of knowledge and insight. Every so often we gather enough crumbs to put together into a whole slice. When we form this slice we get an AH-HAA moment, a moment of growth or new understanding.

As we go through life we collect these crumbs and slices, putting them together and trying to complete our loaf of bread, our wholeness, our divinity.

Processing Our Experience

When we are touched by a healing energy we are given a basket of crumbs from which to choose. Sometimes, depending on the healing modality, the connection between the healer and client, and the client's readiness, we may take one crumb, a handful or a whole slice. On very rare occasions some have been known in an instant to see and take the entire loaf, achieving Nirvana, or Enlightenment. Most of us, however, take only a few crumbs at a time, as sudden and massive change often causes much stress.

What's the frequency, Al?
Depending on how many crumbs we already have of a particular slice in our basket at a given time, we may not feel much has changed after a healing session. When we have collected enough crumbs to finish the slice, we say "a miracle, what an amazing healer," negating the many healing sessions and moments during which we collected the individual crumbs. We may not feel much before that tipping point of completing the slice.

At other times we may take a whole slice's worth of crumbs, but then we must take them home to piece together - and it's only then that we get the AH-HAA. We often do not connect or believe that the healing had anything to do with the AH-HAA moment we got a week or a month later.

The point is, every time you have a healing you will get exactly what your body and soul want at that moment. It is YOU who decides how little or how much to take depending on your path and readiness to embrace change.

Be Patient, Be Open, Be Happy

and allow yourself to receive and take all that you desire.

10 Steps in Either Direction: Your Relationship to Yourself

Today's blog is by Todd Stewart, who provides acupuncture, meditation, energy work and qi gong at Healium.

This isn't about any particular modality or treatment style or whatever. It's about relationship.

Of course, whatever treatment you're getting is fine. That's the door that was closest to you at the time. For whatever reason(s) - and a lot of them would be unconscious - you've chosen to receive a treatment (or therapy) of This Type from This Person. Okay, cool.

Keep in mind: it's/we're just a tool or resource for you to use. What's more important than that, though, is this:

Whatever they/we do with you is not as important as what you do with yourself.

Another way of saying it:

Anything you "have done to you" pales in significance when placed next to the most fundamental thing:

Your relationship to yourself.

An extension of this is:

Your relationship to your major complaints, or primary pathology, or whatever it is that bugs you most.

Because, right, your relationship to anything defines how that thing influences your life. Your relationship to YOURSELF determines what sort of life you live.

Todd is also Vice President of the Healium Ninja Auxiliary.
Anything that comes from without won't "stick" as well if you don't help it stick by changing yourself from within.

See, we all choose what direction we face (albeit usually unconsciously). There are two directions: better and worse. What's your choice? What's your preference? If you're reading this, I'd guess, overall, it's "better."

It's like each of us is standing in the middle of a misty mountain path, and we can only see 10 steps in either direction. Each step we take, forward or backward, we can still only see 10 steps. Step, step, step: we can still only see the same distance.

So, no matter where you are in your own health journey, it is a moment-by-moment conscious decision to keep moving in the direction you'd prefer to move in.

Every. Single. Day.

Yeah. It never ends. Sometimes, sure, take a break, check out the view, have a plateau, integrate the work you've done. Nice one. Passivity is as essential as activity. Night follows day, winter follows summer follows winter.

Don't try to change the thing, try changing your relationship to it, instead. Play a game, there are five steps:

1. Awareness. You're already aware that something is bugging you. Tick.

2. Acknowledgement. Just acknowledge it's bugging you. Drop the judgment, drop the opinion, drop the label. It is what it is. Okay. (You can also acknowledge that you judge it, after you're aware that you judge it . . . ).

3. Acceptance. You can then accept that you have "this" (it's not you, it's a thing you have).

4. Appreciation. In what way does this improve your life? What have you learnt about yourself? (This is the step people usually find the most challenging.

5. Allowance. The above being done, sit back and relax. Let the thing change. Because you've changed how you feel about it. This can't help but change it.

Keep it light, keep it fun. Say hi to your mum for me. :o)

The Healing Journey

Today's blog is by Stewart Cameron Harris, who offers meditation, channeled guidance and energy healing, and regression hypnosis at Healium.

"We are all on our personal healing journey." These were the opening words to a talk by a healer and spiritual teacher I attended some time ago. I felt some resistance to this statement, but as he continued I found myself very much enjoying his talk. His opening words stayed with me.

Inspired, empowered, and enlivened by the incredible traditional practices coming from yoga and meditation, I had taken an attitude of self-reliance. It had been a fulfilling journey in these traditions, solid and yet experimental, challenging and yet comforting. I had a feeling of certainty, believing that countless others had walked this path before me, and had left signs and tools showing the way.

However, I had begun to be aware of a feeling of need, experiencing a plateau of sorts. It was most unexpected, and a calling that had begun was now being answered.

Almost despite myself, within a year of this talk I found myself attending a training in Shasta, California to become a reader and healer. I had been invited and gifted the travel and accommodation to travel there from Japan. It felt like a miracle.

Through my experiences training in Shasta I came to understand the value of the healing professional. Much like bringing a clear light into the shadows of a room, with help I could realise and transcend limiting aspects of myself which I had felt but been unable to understand. A profound and renewed sense of trust developed. It was heart opening, liberating, and fun, so fun.

It is an unusual experience to illuminate the shadows in our life. There is a kind of discomfort, an inner resistance, and then as clarity dawns a feeling of liberation and joy that is the like the essence of life itself.

And these shadows are ever present. At times they are strong and bring a great feeling of limitation in our life, and at other times they sit gently in the background as aspects that we'll get around to exploring at some later time. They manifest as negative thought patterns, relationship difficulties, low or unstable energy levels, physical troubles, and illness and disease in their strongest degree. Always there is interconnection between symptoms, as if life is telling us something and repeating the message when we miss it the first time.

Paramount is the inner world of the mind and the patterns of thought that constitute our beliefs, whether they are conscious or unconscious. When we are able to consciously realise the limitation of a belief and embrace a more truthful and empowering attitude for ourselves a profound shift occurs. Like moving from black and white to colour. Then the body and external environment naturally start their shift to align with our new paradigm.

The healing professional is there to assist us when we wish. With their objective point of view and expertise, they help us identify core issues, empower us in the direction of our potential, and support the emotional, energetic, and physical bodies to align and integrate.

I have come to realise this continual process of living more of our truth as the healing journey, and I now see that we are all experiencing this journey in our own unique way.

The Process of Process

Today's blog is by Martyn Cook, who offers hands-on energy healing and tension-release massage at Healium.

Someone just asked me, "What on earth is process facilitation, and what does it have to do with self-healing?" Well, process could be understood in contrast to content, which would be your story about what you think is causing all that pain or irritation in your life (or in your body). As an aside, the pain in your life will eventually appear in your body: Traditional Chinese Medicine does not consider psychology separate from physiology, so why do we?

Process is the flow of emotions, ideas and energies through a person's consciousness (and through the body), and goes on all the time. In our culture we tend to disregard this inner landscape, and attend almost entirely to what is going on in "the outside world." Only when depressed, traumatised or injured do we experience the insistent intrusion of this inner world.

In our language we speak of a broken heart, a gut feel, or something causing us a "pain in the neck," and these are useful observations about our own personal process. But, for most of us, our inner processes are automatic and below the surface, and we don't know what is going on, nor how to direct these processes more skillfully - until the pain or disease arrives.

Hence facilitation - which is inviting another person to bring a trained eye to our inner goings-on, and elucidate them for us. For the facilitator, it is about helping clients make changes and get the results they desire in their lives. It is about smoothing or easing the way, and offering guidance in what might be effective ways of working. It is empowering and encouraging.

Facilitation is a bit like working with the energy of a lively river - regulating speed and depth of flow, navigating through turbulence, and confronting areas of stagnation and blockage. It works always with the here and now to improve the way the river flows. In contrast, a story (content) is usually about what I believe happened to me in the past, or what I am afraid will happen to me in the future. Both kinds of story leave me feeling powerless or overwhelmed - and tend to repeat over and over.

The main benefit of process facilitation is being able to disengage from these repeating stories. It brings relief from suffering, enhancing your capacity to live more fully and productively, and to have better relationships with others. It is a process of learning to heal yourself. The capacity arises to dwell in two realms at once - the inner realm and the outer realm - which brings a sense of groundedness, calm and confidence. Plus excitement.

Martyn is currently at Healium on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To book a session, click here.
