Easter Class Schedule and Kids' Yoga!
Greetings, all! We have some news of the scheduling sort. First, there will be no classes on Good Friday (3 April) or Easter Monday (6 April). However, on 4 April we will be holding our regular 75-minute Saturday-morning Power Yoga class, starring Drew. We'd love to see you!
Second, Kids' Holiday Yoga! We have a special four-class term lined up for your holiday break. The classes run on two consecutive Wednesdays and Fridays, April 8, 10, 15, and 17. These classes are for kids ages 3 1/2 to 10, each with parent or caregiver, and cost $15 per class, $25 for two classes, or $40 for all four. These classes will be held at Healium from 10 to 10.45 am, and are taught by Isa.
The next regular term of Kids' Yoga follows soon after, running Mondays from 3.30 to 4.15 pm at Owhiro Bay School. The nine-class term runs from 27 April through 29 June (skipping the 1 June holiday). Also for kids ages 3 1/2 to 10, with parent or caregiver, these classes cost $72 and are also taught by Isa.
To register for either (or both) Kids' Yoga terms, email us at hi@healium.co.nz or call us on 04 499 0334.
We look forward to seeing you, and wish you all a very Happy Easter!

Family Yoga Classes at Healium
We are thrilled to announce that this term we'll be offering a new exciting class:
Family Yoga - from pregnancy through to four-year-olds!
This is a yoga class where the parents get to enjoy yoga's many benefits for body and mind, along with their young children. Our sequence is specially designed to support pregnancy and post-partum, as well as make it possible for participation on those days when a little one might need constant body contact. For these times, we recommend using a sturdy baby carrier that holds the child safely against the parent's body (a soft structured ergonomic carrier, a long wrap or a mei tai, on either the parent's front or back). These kinds of carriers places the weight evenly on the wearer's hips, enabling him or her to get into correct alignment.
These classes are designed to include and excite the children with an animal theme, to enhance the parents' bonding with their babies, and support each child's development. They have been planned specifically for each child to meet the goals of the principles and strands of Te Whariki, the New Zealand early childhood curriculum. Te Whariki means "the woven mat," which represents how the principles and strands, learning outcomes, dispositions and everything else in the child's life intertwine and are all dependent on each other.
These classes are held at Healium on Tuesday mornings from 10 to 10.45 am, beginning Tuesday, 6 May, and are taught by yoga instructor, early-childhood educator and mother Isa Pike.
Pricing is per family: $15 for drop-in or $48 for four consecutive weekly classes.
We look forward to meeting you and your families and doing yoga together!

Easter at Healium
You may have noticed that we have a big ol' double-whammy public holiday coming up in April, what with ANZAC Day falling on the Friday after Easter weekend. While a lot of people have booked leave for the three-day week in between, Sylvia thought it would be fun to have all of her wisdom teeth extracted and use the break to recover/drink green smoothies.
The upshot of all this is: we'll be having a quiet week here at Healium!
Thursday, 17 April: business as usual, except Power Yoga Basics at 5.30 pm is canceled. Then the following classes are running:
Good Friday, 18 April: Power Yoga at 12.15 pm with Drew
Easter Saturday, 19 April: Power Yoga at 9.30 am with Drew (75 minutes)
Easter Monday, 21 April: Power Yoga at 12.15 pm with Drew
Tuesday, 22 April: Power Yoga at 7.15 am with Sophie; Power Yoga Basics at 5.30 pm with Drew
Wednesday, 23 April: Power Yoga Basics at 1.15 pm with Isa; Power Yoga at 5.30 pm with Russell; and Egyptian-style bellydance at 6.30 pm with Jen
Thursday, 24 April: Power Yoga at 7.15 am with Russell; Power Yoga at 1.15 pm with Isa; and Power Yoga Basics at 5.30 pm with Isa
ANZAC Day, Friday, 25 April: Power Yoga at 12.15 pm with Drew
From Saturday, 26 April, we'll be back to our full schedule. The schedule changes above are reflected in our online booking system.
Enjoy your holiday, and we'll see you then if not before!

Happy New Healium!
![]() |
Sylvia in her new natural habitat. |
We're well back into our full schedule for the new year, and it's awesome to see so many faces old and new getting their yoga/Pilates/bellydance, etc. on!
February brings us a change in venue. Fear not, we're simply moving to Level 2 in the same building, Hallenstein House. The last class on Level 4 will be Gentle Yoga on Friday, 31 January at 1.15 pm; the first class on Level 2 will be Power Yoga on Saturday, 1 February at 9.30 am. It would be great to see you there for our first Om in the new studio!
You may well ask: why are we moving? Healium founders Jenifer and Ryan were planning to move Healium to a new space as early as last July, but then Immigration decided to chime in and that delayed things a bit. But we've been getting the new space ready for a few months now, and we're really keen to open some new doors!
The new space is on the same side of the floor (on the right as you come out of the lifts) and has a reception area, a treatment room, and a yoga room. You'll notice the lack of spare treatment rooms for changing - so for those of you who can't come to class already changed, the bathrooms are right next to the space (just like on Level 4).
We have a few finishing touches to put on the space - painting the doors and adding some mirrors for our Postural Patterning and dance work. We'll let you know when we have a proper studio-warming in the near future - you're all invited!
All our practitioners are coming with us and the class schedule remains the same, so we just need to get used to pushing the lift button for Level 2! See you there from 1 February!
Love from team Healium Wellington.

New Class Schedule: Yoga, Pilates & More!
As we announced last week, Jenifer and I will be transitioning Healium's Wellington operations to Sylvia. To facilitate this transition and carry you forward into further Healiumness, we've come up with a new class schedule. It takes effect Monday, 2 September, and it includes most everything you've already been taking as well as two awesome new classes: Performance Conditioning and Bellydance! Check 'em out:
Performance Conditioning. A blend of Pilates and yoga to develop strength, flexibility and mobility, focusing on a different area each week (e.g., legs, shoulders, arms). Great for dancers, athletes, actors - and everyone else!
Bellydance. Marvel at what your body can do as we explore isolations and foundational bellydance technique. Great for both beginners and more advanced dancers. 60 minutes - same pricing!
(Want a low-cost introduction to bellydance? Sylvia will be leading Have Pelvis, Will Boogie: Introductory Bellydance Workshop through Chalkle on Saturday, 31 August at Healium. At this writing, only four spaces remain. For details, click here.)

Healium 2.0
So, it's time for an important update, since everyone is starting to ask: what about immigration? Well, we heard back from them a few weeks ago, and this was (pretty much) their answer: "You are doing great, but not great enough to stay. Congratulations on investing so much time and money, for turning a good profit, but not good enough - kthnxgbye."
Yes, seriously. No, there are no other options available to us for gaining residency (we checked). Thus, we are going forward to the US, and you are probably staying here on account of your being residents and citizens and work visa holders and having jobs and lives and stuff.
So, we're going. But, Healium is staying. And here's how:
1. Sylvia is going to take over operations of Healium Wellington!
Most of you know Sylvia and, like we do, think she is great. When I look at Sylvia, I see a person who is where I was before coming to New Zealand. I see a person who is passionate about movement and learning, who loves working with each student and giving them personalized instruction in a group setting, and who has great business skills and is ready to take on a place like Healium!
It takes a lot of courage for her to step up into this position, and that says a lot about her character if you ask me. I know that she's going to be a great leader "on the ground" for this community, and Ryan and I are going to be with her every step of the way!
During the next few weeks of our transition, we'll be announcing what changes are afoot - all with our 100% support and backing - to keep this community healthy and vibrant, to make sure we are serving your needs and interests, and carrying you forward as the community grows and changes.
2. We are setting up the Healium Virtual Studio!
Oddly enough, sometime in early July I had this idea to be able to meet the needs of my clients in Philadelphia and on the West Coast (US), and a few folks in random places such as Australia and Israel. Obviously, all of my research and work around this was actually to set it up for you!
I hadn't planned on getting the library up and rolling - or even filming it until October - but as you know, we'll start filming in September. We need your help, and we'll pay you in chocolate. So let me know that you are coming and what your chocolate requirements are!
In addition to the library, I will be available for online private lessons and some group classes and workshops and whatnot. This is also how we'll be continuing the teacher training and how I'll be doing Pilates and bellydancing with Sylvia - through the Internet! It's a funny little miracle, isn't it?
3. We are going to start some form of Healium Pittsburgh!
This may not be all that interesting to you, but since we can't stay in New Zealand, we sat around for about 45 minutes and decided that we should probably go somewhere where we didn't have to apply for a visa. Other attributes we looked for were low cost of living, job opportunities, opportunities for Healium, Steiner education for Hawk, and accessible city living.
We hit upon Pittsburgh because it fits all the criteria - and is near our families. So, away we go on another adventure.
Now, you probably want to know about timelines.
Right now, we are transitioning Healium over to Sylvia. We'll do this through the month of August, and in September, she'll run point while we back her up. Then in October, Sylvia will take on full ownership of the business.
Ryan and I will be here - and I'll be teaching most of the classes as well as available for private lessons -- until October. And then we head to the US!
We'll also have a final farewell bash for our community sometime at the end of September/beginning of October. We'll let you know when we have the final date.
All in all, Hawk put it best: We're excited to go, but sad to leave. Every one of you means so much to us, and we are so thankful for your dedication, love, and friendship during our time here. We want that connection to continue - with Healium on the ground here in Wellington, the virtual studio, and in any other ways we can create connection!

Beautiful Backs! A Yoga Workshop
Guess what? It's time for our next yoga workshop! This time we turn our attention . . . backwards!
Our backs hold us together. They shoulder the load. They help us stand tall and face the world. But when they're not in good working order, they can be an endless source of pain and discomfort.
Strong, beautiful backs can be ours if we take care of them and move with awareness. Turns out yoga is a great way to do this!
In this workshop, we will:
What: Beautiful backs!
- discuss the basic anatomy of the back and the different things that can cause pain and restriction;
- go through the underlying alignment theory to get us into the best positions to open those hips; and
- dive into an amazing, all-levels, beautiful backs yoga sequence - beginners welcome!
You'll get heaps of tips to take with you to your home practice as well as to your regular classes. Register soon, as space is limited to 15 students!
Where: Healium.
When: Saturday, 10 August, 11.30 am to 1.30 pm - right after our regular Saturday morning yoga class.
How Much: $45: cash, EFTPOS or Internet Banking.
What: Beautiful backs!
Who: Jenifer Parker will be leading this workshop - that's me! I've been teaching yoga for 16 years now, specializing in alignment and therapeutic modifications. Currently, I'm learning how to fail spectacularly at parkour and roller derby.

NEW! Mindfulness Meditation Classes at Healium
We will soon have another great evening class on offer! Beginning Wednesday, 7 August, Karl Baker will be leading a four-week introductory course in mindfulness meditation. In today's blog, Karl shares his perspective on the significant benefits of a mindfulness meditation practice.
Mindfulness meditation is growing in popularity as an effective way to reduce stress, reduce anxiety and depression, as well as increase feelings of well-being, depth, self-awareness and enjoyment of life. It is proving to be increasingly popular with everyday people - business people, moms and dads, students, particularly because of its non-religious and simple approach.
Many peer-reviewed studies are now illustrating (1) how mindfulness and meditation work to reduce stress, anxiety and depression; and (2) the significant positive impact this approach has on our emotional state, immune system and feelings of well-being.
Adopted in-house by companies such as Google, mindfulness meditation is also getting traction with celebrities such as comedian Ruby Wax. "If you want to free yourself from anxiety and stress, and feel truly at ease with yourself, then mindfulness is for you," Ruby says. She describes mindfulness as "the practical watching of your own thoughts, like a shrink would do, but now you're not paying."
I have found mindfulness meditation to be highly effective in a number of ways: I've reduced negative thought patterns, I look after myself in a genuine way more easily, I'm more available for other people. I've become friendly with difficult emotions, enjoy life more, and simply like myself a whole lot better. These are common outcomes from a mindfulness meditation practice.
My approach to teaching mindfulness meditation is to "keep it real" - practical and not precious. I base the facilitation and instruction on my own experience and as much as possible have you feel in to and trust your own experience too. In the classes, you can sit on a chair rather than a cushion if you prefer (I do). Each class has a period of guided meditation with a theme, instruction and discussion, plus a handout sheet with more information.
I've received extensive one-on-one training from experienced meditation teacher Jeremy Logan. I've also attended many intensive silent retreats and received instruction from mindfulness meditation trainer Stephen Archer. I find that I am very much learning too and look forward to sharing this practice with you!
. . .

Randomly Asked Questions: How Often Should I Practice Yoga?
I love this question. It's so deceptively simple! Yay!
What makes yoga really work is consistency. It's most important that you practice habitually - on a regular basis, that is - in order to experience the benefits of the practice.
To an extent, that still doesn't answer the question, but it's the right starting point. From here, it mostly goes into two things: my opinion (based on experience) and the tradition.
You'll note that we often encourage people just starting out to come once a week. This is because starting a yoga practice is about developing a habit to create consistency to get the benefits. It's much easier to commit to "once per week for 45 minutes" than to "every day." It just is.
And to be honest, just once a week is enough to get the benefits of yoga. Ryan loves to lift weights and go for his runs and do his foam rolling. It doesn't leave a whole lot of time for yoga, in all honesty. But, he practices once a week - and has for years - and he's noticed that it really makes a difference in the overall quality of both his physical well being and his mental calm. Without that weekly practice, he's just a bit more stressed, a bit tighter than he is when he's "on" the yoga!
So, once a week is a great place to get started and to also get the benefits of yoga practice.
Now from this point we're going to dive into the differences between practice versus class and the different traditional perspectives on these things.
Traditionally speaking, you practice yoga daily and - according to my earlier teachers, at least - you take class about twice a week. Later teachers suggested taking "as many classes as you want," and I found that I really liked taking four a week. That was my sweet spot.
Because yoga works in terms of volume training, the idea is to do yoga frequently. The truth is, the more you practice, the more quickly you experience results in terms of both mind and body. This is why I give the suggestion of the 3-4-pose home yoga practice at the end of class. Doing a little bit every day goes a long way!
Now, of course, not everyone does autonomous practice every day. That's okay! The truth is that yoga is a tool for you to use the way you want to, in a way that fits comfortably into your life. If daily practice isn't for you, then that's fine!
And this takes us to classes. The reality is that you can come as much as you want.
There are no real rules around this. Some people prefer the group setting for its community and energy. It's what I love about class! Others really like the encouragement that the teacher provides during class, as well as the learning process that comes with it. And others find that the accountability of showing up for class really keeps them motivated. There are lots of reasons to go to class!
I find that - for me - four classes a week is great. I just prefer that, and then have a home practice besides. It's just what works for me. Others find that one class a week is good, others two, and we have a couple of folks who come 5-6 times a week! And, most of them have home practice in between, and some just take a few days off between classes. It's really and truly up to you!

NEW! Qigong Classes at Healium
We're pleased to announce a new offering in our class schedule: a five-week course in qigong led by Healium practitioner Michelle Wood.
Qigong is an ancient health practice from China based on a holistic view of human life. It's a harmonious, meditative practice that joins breathing with gentle, flowing movements to exercise the body and calm the mind.
Over the course of five weekly classes you will learn how the practice of qigong helps us:
- manage stress effectively;
- bring mindfulness to our everyday activities;
- focus our mind inward in order to work on our challenges - mental, emotional and physical;
- attain our natural calm, relaxed, joyous and balanced state.
You'll also learn qi therapy techniques for self-healing. The qigong taught in this course is Zhineng Qigong, a safe and effective form developed over 20 years of study and which incorporates the essence of traditional qigong in theory and practice.
Where: Healium.
When: 6.30 to 7.30 pm Thursdays beginning 4 July.
How Much: $99 for the five-week course; or $22 drop-in per session.

Randomly Asked Questions: Why Do We Repeat the Same Sequences Over and Over?
I recently had someone ask me to change one of our sequence because, after two classes, she already knew the sequence and wanted something new.
I understand this impulse. I often like to do different things too, and this is partly why we have the different kinds of classes on our schedule - so students can experience different things in their practice throughout the week.
But there are also several good reasons why we keep the sequences basically the same, and so I thought I would speak to that today.
Learning Yoga
Practicing the same sequence of postures again and again facilitates learning yoga in terms of both the nuances of the postures and the underlying process of sequencing theory (how the postures fit together).
Yoga postures often look simple but are actually quite nuanced. When we first learn them, we learn their basic, gross elements. In fact, we learn modified versions suited to our unique needs. Which means that, over time, not only do we learn the details of the posture in terms of quality of feeling in the body and mind, but also how to deepen the posture as our agility develops.
Likewise, sequencing is not just choreography. It is a process of connecting together postures in an order that will create a specific outcome. Each of the sequences in our classes is designed for specific purposes; practiced over time, those purposes are revealed in the body and mind. If the sequence is constantly changing, then the body-mind doesn't "grasp" what we are doing. Even if you don't consciously know what is going on, the body and mind are learning this process and allowing it to guide and carry you through the practice.
Progressing in Yoga
One of the real benefits of the same sequence of postures is that you get to see and feel your progress. Remember your first class at Healium? Do you remember where you felt tight, where things felt particularly challenging and where things felt easy? Now, consider your practice today. Even if it's only your third class, you are practicing with more confidence because you have a sense of what is coming.
Beyond this, you can notice "Wow, on Monday, my hamstrings were really tight, but today they feel really open!" You'll also notice how things are progressing in total -- where your ranges of motion are expanding so that you have better quality of movement in day-to-day life.
What's exciting about this is that you get to test and retest. If you observe how your body and mind are going class to class, you can begin to see the pattern of progress. When you notice something that you really want to work on - where you feel like you are stuck in your progress -- we can talk about it and emphasize that in your practice, given through hands-on assists and specific instruction as the teacher makes her way through the room!
You then take that specialized instruction forward too, knowing with certainty that the sequence will be basically the same. You can work on those elements going forward, achieving the physical and mental benefits you desire.
Repeating Yoga
There's this thing out there in the fitness world that is pretty common knowledge. It's called volume training, and it's great for learning and practicing a skill (for example, increasing the number of pull-ups you can do). Essentially, it means repeating the same movement over and over and over - at a higher frequency but lower intensity. When you do the movement, you don't go "all out 2000%!!!!" You just do the movement calmly and with focus, doing as many as you can in the time allotted, doing it day after day.
Volume training works so well because it develops the nervous system through a process called synaptic facilitation.
Synaptic facilitation is the development of new synaptic connections in the brain and throughout the body. Synapses are the primary communication device of the neurological system - they allow the electrical and chemical currents of information to pass from neuron to neuron.
As we move in certain patterns (and for that matter think in certain patterns) - our bodies create specific connections between neurons. Neurons create special bonds when they communicate with each other. The more one certain neuron talks to another certain neuron and doesn't talk to other neurons, the more the connection is strengthened between the chatty, friendly neurons and weakened between the non-communicative ones.
The thing about yoga is that it works on both body and mind specifically - it trains both. Physically, it's connecting neurons that live out there in the body, in the nerves, with the brain. In the brain itself, the new kinesthetic awareness is creating new pathways, connecting parts that may not have been connected before because of their sudden need to communicate in order to move the body effectively through the movements.
In addition, our yoga practice is a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a technique of developing awareness around (or new ways of experiencing) how we are thinking about the information we are consciously perceiving. Our common reactions to information is our common synaptic pattern - how parts of the brain "light up" and speak to each other. Through mindfulness, we not only see our normal patterns of thinking, but we also begin to consciously create new ways of thinking about that which we are perceiving.
What really makes this work is repetition. The more we practice these things, the more those new pathways are established in the nervous system. We start to notice not only new body awareness, which provides us with an incredibly agile and sensitive tool for perceiving and acting in our world, but also that the way we are thinking is changing. How we approach struggles and problems really adapts as more diverse synaptic connections are made. We begin to realize that when Mom says X and that usually sets us off, we could simply observe the process and then perhaps see a new way to respond to it that is unique to the moment. And in practicing that we might entirely change our relationship with Mom and with whatever X button Mom may be pushing or we feel is being pushed.
By practicing the same sequences over and over, we are creating these new pathways consistently.
Changing the Sequence
There are, of course, reasons to change sequences.
First, our practices do progress and, as such, our needs change. Over time, we have one sequence well integrated in our bodies and minds, and we need to go a bit deeper. We want to create new awarenesses, new strengths and balances in the body, and new synaptic pathways in terms of both physical, perceptive being and also emotional and intellectual development.
Second, all sequences have gaps - things they prize and things they leave out to pick up at another time. This is why we currently have four sequences plus Pilates on our schedule - it allows us to fill several gaps, progress individual students' practices and help develop different physical and mental pathways of being. It helps to cultivate a more holistic, well-rounded experience.
Third, a sequence may have outlived its purpose for an individual or a community. There are times when it is just the right thing to let a sequence go. Maybe it isn't working - or maybe it served its purpose for the community or individual for that time. Yoga is a process of learning and growth - not just for students but for teachers as well. We are always learning more about the practice of yoga, and we learn the most through the direct interaction of our students.
We may discover that, in the future, a sequence that we have "always used" no longer serves you, our students. When this arises, we will change the sequence to better suit the needs of the community. Because that's what yoga is about. Yoga is here to serve us - all of us - and so long as a sequence provides the benefits we require, then it's good to use. And if it doesn't, then it's time to change and adapt!
Yoga's adaptability is what makes it such a beautiful practice.
