Welcome Back to Healium Founders! + Summer Holiday Schedule

Here at Healium we've just welcomed the incomparable Jenifer, Ryan and Hawk back to Wellington! And, yes, Jenifer starts teaching here this week: Wednesday and Thursday at 5.30 pm, and Friday at 12.15 and 1.15 pm.

Along with Drew, Jenifer will be around over the holiday period, and we're offering classes from 23 December to 4 January as follows:

Our full yoga schedule starts back on Tuesday 6 January, and Pilates and bellydance resume the week beginning 18 January.

A happy festive season to you all from team Healium!

Happy New Healium!

Sylvia in her new natural habitat.

We're well back into our full schedule for the new year, and it's awesome to see so many faces old and new getting their yoga/Pilates/bellydance, etc. on!

February brings us a change in venue. Fear not, we're simply moving to Level 2 in the same building, Hallenstein House. The last class on Level 4 will be Gentle Yoga on Friday, 31 January at 1.15 pm; the first class on Level 2 will be Power Yoga on Saturday, 1 February at 9.30 am. It would be great to see you there for our first Om in the new studio!

You may well ask: why are we moving? Healium founders Jenifer and Ryan were planning to move Healium to a new space as early as last July, but then Immigration decided to chime in and that delayed things a bit. But we've been getting the new space ready for a few months now, and we're really keen to open some new doors!

The new space is on the same side of the floor (on the right as you come out of the lifts) and has a reception area, a treatment room, and a yoga room. You'll notice the lack of spare treatment rooms for changing - so for those of you who can't come to class already changed, the bathrooms are right next to the space (just like on Level 4).

We have a few finishing touches to put on the space - painting the doors and adding some mirrors for our Postural Patterning and dance work. We'll let you know when we have a proper studio-warming in the near future - you're all invited!

All our practitioners are coming with us and the class schedule remains the same, so we just need to get used to pushing the lift button for Level 2! See you there from 1 February!

Love from team Healium Wellington.

New Class Schedule: Yoga, Pilates & More!

As we announced last week, Jenifer and I will be transitioning Healium's Wellington operations to Sylvia. To facilitate this transition and carry you forward into further Healiumness, we've come up with a new class schedule. It takes effect Monday, 2 September, and it includes most everything you've already been taking as well as two awesome new classes: Performance Conditioning and Bellydance! Check 'em out:

Performance Conditioning. A blend of Pilates and yoga to develop strength, flexibility and mobility, focusing on a different area each week (e.g., legs, shoulders, arms). Great for dancers, athletes, actors - and everyone else!

Bellydance. Marvel at what your body can do as we explore isolations and foundational bellydance technique. Great for both beginners and more advanced dancers. 60 minutes - same pricing!

(Want a low-cost introduction to bellydance? Sylvia will be leading Have Pelvis, Will Boogie: Introductory Bellydance Workshop through Chalkle on Saturday, 31 August at Healium. At this writing, only four spaces remain. For details, click here.)

And here's that new timetable:

Randomly Asked Questions: Why Do We Repeat the Same Sequences Over and Over?

I recently had someone ask me to change one of our sequence because, after two classes, she already knew the sequence and wanted something new.

I understand this impulse. I often like to do different things too, and this is partly why we have the different kinds of classes on our schedule - so students can experience different things in their practice throughout the week.

But there are also several good reasons why we keep the sequences basically the same, and so I thought I would speak to that today.

Learning Yoga

Practicing the same sequence of postures again and again facilitates learning yoga in terms of both the nuances of the postures and the underlying process of sequencing theory (how the postures fit together).

Yoga postures often look simple but are actually quite nuanced. When we first learn them, we learn their basic, gross elements. In fact, we learn modified versions suited to our unique needs. Which means that, over time, not only do we learn the details of the posture in terms of quality of feeling in the body and mind, but also how to deepen the posture as our agility develops.

Likewise, sequencing is not just choreography. It is a process of connecting together postures in an order that will create a specific outcome. Each of the sequences in our classes is designed for specific purposes; practiced over time, those purposes are revealed in the body and mind. If the sequence is constantly changing, then the body-mind doesn't "grasp" what we are doing. Even if you don't consciously know what is going on, the body and mind are learning this process and allowing it to guide and carry you through the practice.

Progressing in Yoga

One of the real benefits of the same sequence of postures is that you get to see and feel your progress. Remember your first class at Healium? Do you remember where you felt tight, where things felt particularly challenging and where things felt easy? Now, consider your practice today. Even if it's only your third class, you are practicing with more confidence because you have a sense of what is coming.

Beyond this, you can notice "Wow, on Monday, my hamstrings were really tight, but today they feel really open!" You'll also notice how things are progressing in total -- where your ranges of motion are expanding so that you have better quality of movement in day-to-day life.

What's exciting about this is that you get to test and retest. If you observe how your body and mind are going class to class, you can begin to see the pattern of progress. When you notice something that you really want to work on - where you feel like you are stuck in your progress -- we can talk about it and emphasize that in your practice, given through hands-on assists and specific instruction as the teacher makes her way through the room!

You then take that specialized instruction forward too, knowing with certainty that the sequence will be basically the same. You can work on those elements going forward, achieving the physical and mental benefits you desire.

Repeating Yoga

There's this thing out there in the fitness world that is pretty common knowledge. It's called volume training, and it's great for learning and practicing a skill (for example, increasing the number of pull-ups you can do). Essentially, it means repeating the same movement over and over and over - at a higher frequency but lower intensity. When you do the movement, you don't go "all out 2000%!!!!" You just do the movement calmly and with focus, doing as many as you can in the time allotted, doing it day after day.

Volume training works so well because it develops the nervous system through a process called synaptic facilitation.

Synaptic facilitation is the development of new synaptic connections in the brain and throughout the body. Synapses are the primary communication device of the neurological system - they allow the electrical and chemical currents of information to pass from neuron to neuron.

As we move in certain patterns (and for that matter think in certain patterns) - our bodies create specific connections between neurons. Neurons create special bonds when they communicate with each other. The more one certain neuron talks to another certain neuron and doesn't talk to other neurons, the more the connection is strengthened between the chatty, friendly neurons and weakened between the non-communicative ones.

The thing about yoga is that it works on both body and mind specifically - it trains both. Physically, it's connecting neurons that live out there in the body, in the nerves, with the brain. In the brain itself, the new kinesthetic awareness is creating new pathways, connecting parts that may not have been connected before because of their sudden need to communicate in order to move the body effectively through the movements.

In addition, our yoga practice is a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a technique of developing awareness around (or new ways of experiencing) how we are thinking about the information we are consciously perceiving. Our common reactions to information is our common synaptic pattern - how parts of the brain "light up" and speak to each other. Through mindfulness, we not only see our normal patterns of thinking, but we also begin to consciously create new ways of thinking about that which we are perceiving.

What really makes this work is repetition. The more we practice these things, the more those new pathways are established in the nervous system. We start to notice not only new body awareness, which provides us with an incredibly agile and sensitive tool for perceiving and acting in our world, but also that the way we are thinking is changing. How we approach struggles and problems really adapts as more diverse synaptic connections are made. We begin to realize that when Mom says X and that usually sets us off, we could simply observe the process and then perhaps see a new way to respond to it that is unique to the moment. And in practicing that we might entirely change our relationship with Mom and with whatever X button Mom may be pushing or we feel is being pushed.

By practicing the same sequences over and over, we are creating these new pathways consistently.

Changing the Sequence

There are, of course, reasons to change sequences.

First, our practices do progress and, as such, our needs change. Over time, we have one sequence well integrated in our bodies and minds, and we need to go a bit deeper. We want to create new awarenesses, new strengths and balances in the body, and new synaptic pathways in terms of both physical, perceptive being and also emotional and intellectual development.

Second, all sequences have gaps - things they prize and things they leave out to pick up at another time. This is why we currently have four sequences plus Pilates on our schedule - it allows us to fill several gaps, progress individual students' practices and help develop different physical and mental pathways of being. It helps to cultivate a more holistic, well-rounded experience.

Third, a sequence may have outlived its purpose for an individual or a community. There are times when it is just the right thing to let a sequence go. Maybe it isn't working - or maybe it served its purpose for the community or individual for that time. Yoga is a process of learning and growth - not just for students but for teachers as well. We are always learning more about the practice of yoga, and we learn the most through the direct interaction of our students.

We may discover that, in the future, a sequence that we have "always used" no longer serves you, our students. When this arises, we will change the sequence to better suit the needs of the community. Because that's what yoga is about. Yoga is here to serve us - all of us - and so long as a sequence provides the benefits we require, then it's good to use. And if it doesn't, then it's time to change and adapt!

Yoga's adaptability is what makes it such a beautiful practice.

Bring A Buddy!

You know that doing yoga and Pilates helps with everyday aches and pains plus develops amazing posture, but what makes it really fun is going with a friend!

After all, with whom will you share all of those yoga/Pilates-related in-jokes about constipation? What about whinging about how much your butt hurts now that you are using your glutes properly? No one understands like those who are experiencing the same thing!

So, to help encourage your buddies to join you, and to reward you for bringing them to classes, we're introducing our "Bring A Buddy" promotion for the month of June!

If you bring a buddy (someone new to Healium), they pay only $5 for their first class!

When you bring five buddies, we'll put your name into a draw to win a brand-new Eko Superlight Manduka yoga mat in green (valued at $63!). And for every five buddies you bring, your  name goes in again!

Holiday Schedule and Special Offers!

The holidays are upon us! It's probably my favorite time of the year! Well, summer more so than Christmas for me, but I know that everyone in NZ loves their holidays!

As such, there's a holiday schedule for our yoga and Pilates classes, and most of you want to know how the class concessions are going to work, so here's a run-down:

Holiday Schedule

We will be running our normal class schedule through 22 December (Saturday morning Power Yoga). We will then resume our full and normal schedule on 7 January (starting with 11.15 Pilates).

Concessions and the Holiday Schedule

You have two options here, so you'll need to let us know which way you want to go.

1. You can use all of your concessions by 22 December. Most of you are on track to do this with your normal, weekly schedule. But, some of you may need to take an additional class during the next two to three weeks.

2. Your card will go on "hold" from 22 December and resume on 7 January. We won't hold it longer than that - it will run. So if you are still out of town that week, I suggest Option 1!

Special Offers

We have two special offers coming up, and I recommend that you take advantage of both!

1. Purchase a Treat Me deal! Tomorrow, 4 December, we are running a deal on Treat Me. All are welcome to do this one, and it's a great way to get your additional weekly drop-ins at a great rate! It's also a great holiday gift for a friend or family member!

2. Today's prices for tomorrow's classes!

As the rate across the board have gone up, we need to raise our prices this coming year (more on that in a minute). As such, we want to offer you your first month in the new year at the current rates. Buy your concession card before 22 December and start it any day in January to get you back in the swing of your weekly practice after your holiday!

Rates in the New Year

We hate raising our rates, but after a lot of consideration and looking at the various options we believe we've come up with something that will work for everyone.

  • Drop-ins will be $15;
  • 1 class per week for 4 weeks will be $48;
  • 2 classes per week for 4 weeks will be $88;
  • Unlimited Monthly for 28 days will be $120.

You'll notice an interesting change there - the Unlimited Monthly!

For those already coming to class three times a week or more, this simply allows you the easiest payment method. You also pay only $7.50–$10 per class, depending on whether you come three or four times per week during the 28 days! It means you have no weekly amounts, so if you go out of town, you can "stack" all your classes into the weeks around your trip. You never "lose" any classes!

Memberships

Once we get our online auto-payment system set up - very likely in February - we'll be offering six-month and annual memberships! The price points will be the same as above, but you do get the perk of never having to worry about when things end and begin again (set it and forget it!), and you get 5% off all workshops, private lessons and Healium treatments for the six-month membership, and 10% off all of those items for the annual membership!

See you in class! And don't forget to look for us on Treat Me!

MINDBODY Is Go! (Part 2)

It's great to see so many of you already using MINDBODY to book your classes and appointments. We've heard from a number of you, and I've been working under the hood (bonnet?) tweaking the settings here and there, so the process should be a little more clear and intuitive than it may have been last week!

Booking Yoga and Pilates Classes

Once you log in (including via Facebook if you choose), select the Classes tab and then click the Sign Up Now button for the class you want to attend. The Single Reservation screen is displayed.

The main thing to remember here is to click the Register as unpaid button. This lets you reserve the class you want and then pay for it when you turn up for class, just like we've been doing from the start.

If you click the Make a single reservation button instead, an alert will tell you that you have to pay before you can reserve the class! That is untrue! So stick with the Register as unpaid button and all will be well. (The other button will come in handy in just a wee while: you'll have the option to pay for your classes online, right when you book them. This is one of the great virtues of the system and one of the key reasons we switched in the first place! We'll let you know when this is ready for you!)

Any questions at this point? Send us an email or write a comment below. See you soon!

MINDBODY Is Go! (Part 1)

We're there, gang. Our new online booking system is, well, online! Up and running. Ready to go.

But, to help ease everyone into the transition - including ourselves - we're running both MINDBODY and the "old"system concurrently this week. That means we'll honor your existing bookings in Ezybook, but you can start booking your classes and appointments for next week and beyond in MINDBODY.

Click here for the link to MINDBODY. You'll find several tabs, including Appointments and Classes. Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

If you've been making bookings at Healium prior to 15 October 2012, then your details will already be set up in MINDBODY. If you're newer to Healium, then simply enter your information and you'll be all set.

Then, next week, on Monday the 26th, Healium will move to MINDBODY exclusively. At that point you'll find the MINDBODY link on our website in two places: our Booking page and our About Us page. Or, feel free to bookmark the link and go from there!

Excited? We are. Let us know if you have any questions!

Healium Yoga and Movement Classes: Updated Schedule

Hi ho! Yesterday Jenifer took you through some of the wherefores and whyhows of our yoga classes, and somewhere in there she mentioned that our website has been updated, complete with a slightly tweaked class schedule and corresponding class descriptions. It's true, it's there, and you can go see it for yourself in all its digital glory.

However, we like to be thorough; and so for anyone who comes to the blog for the latest timetable, we're reproducing it here, as well:

And of course you're always welcome to take a paper schedule home with you too. See you around!

Meet the Teacher: Sylvia Edge-Perkins

This time around we talk to Sylvia Edge-Perkins, who teaches Pilates at Healium.

1. What is your favorite thing about Pilates?

It's almost infinitely adaptable - I've had students do Pilates in a leg cast. Or in bed.

2. What is your favorite Pilates movement?

The roll-up: from lying on the back, peeling the spine off the floor from the top of the head and reaching the upper body forward over the legs before stacking up into a seated position. It's a really satisfying movement, particularly as many people take a while to "get" it, so it's super-exciting when they do.

3. What is your favorite thing to teach?

Right now I'm really into upper-body posture - the placement of the shoulder blades, rib cage, arms and head. Often people live in a small, forward-oriented range of their available posture, and it's really exciting to see their upper body open up as they learn to stack themselves up tall.

4. What is your favorite movement to teach?

Pilates press-ups, because there's so much in them! Press-ups are a full-body workout, but the Pilates version breaks the set-up into easier-to-manage chunks by adding calf raises, spinal articulation and stretching, and my beloved plank position.

5. What is your favorite thing to do other than practice and teach Pilates?

I love to dance! I teach and perform American Tribal Style bellydance, which is an amazing format for group improvisation in bellydance. It all ties in with my love of movement and the awesomeness of the human body fostered by yoga and Pilates.

Healium Yoga and Movement Evolution!

I'm so excited to announce our new classes, schedule and teachers as we head into spring! The teachers and I have been working diligently all winter, and we're so psyched to provide something new and fresh, something we've never come across before in the yoga world!

At most yoga studios one of two things typically happens: either (1) the owners determine the sequence/style for all the classes or (2) the teachers operate completely independently, teaching whatever they want. At Healium, however, the teachers have come together as a group to create consistent, cohesive sequences across all of our classes.

The really cool thing is that the teachers have a lot in common but also slightly different expertise and "takes" on the material - with the result that our new classes really just "riff" off of what we're already doing. Each class takes elements from different directions and builds on the great yoga you know and love.

And we have two more exciting developments:

  • Pilates! Starting Monday, 3 September we'll be offering Pilates mat classes twice each week.
  • Saturday Yoga! Starting 6 October we'll be offering 75-minute classes on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Mark your calendars!

So here are the new schedule and class descriptions effective Monday, 27 August:

Power Yoga and Power Yoga Basics will be as they have been so far - no changes there.

Power Yoga Elements goes into the small details of our postures and deep, intrinsic muscles by developing awareness of and support for safe mobility in the joints.

Power Yoga Dynamics emphasizes the connection between breath and movement, the flowing dynamic of Power Yoga.

Power Yoga Explorations is longer than the other classes by 30 minutes, giving us more time to explore the postures we know more deeply as well as expand into new, complementary postures to develop new strengths and flexibilities. Held the first and third Saturdays of each month, starting 6 October.

Power Yoga Theory is our special free class (formerly "Power Yoga Exploration"), also 75 minutes long, for those who have been practicing at Healium for six months or longer. Held the second Saturday of each month.

Gentle Yoga is our only yoga class without the word "Power" in its title, but don't let that fool you - it's still a deeply powerful practice! Using props, this class develops deep flexibility through supported long holds, releasing tension in muscles and joints.

Pilates. A series of mat-based exercises which cultivate beautiful posture, strength and flexibility, from the core to the extremities. Starts Monday, 3 September - watch this space for details!

Feldenkrais is a mindful practice that creates new connections between body and brain, leading to greater self-awareness and more graceful movement.

Group Private Class is a private movement class designed specifically for your organization or team.

Finally, the nitty-gritty fine print:
  • All of the classes Monday-Friday are available under the normal pricing structure ($12 drop-in and monthly concessions). This includes all 45-minute yoga classes, Pilates and Feldenkrais!
  • The Saturday Power Yoga Explorations will be held on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Drop-in rate only at $18 per class.
  • The Saturday free class, Power Yoga Theory, will continue on the second Saturday of each month, so long as we have eight or more confirmed people. Class time moves to 9.30 am.

Coming soon: our new teachers!
